FX.co ★ Romania Current Account Deficit Shrinks in May

Romania’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 2.71 billion in May 2026, down from EUR 2.97 billion in the same month a year earlier. This improvement was mainly driven by a 3.6% reduction in the goods deficit, which declined to EUR 2.58 billion, and a 3.6% increase in the services surplus, which rose to EUR 1.01 billion. The primary income deficit also improved slightly, edging down to EUR 1.24 billion from EUR 1.26 billion. At the same time, the secondary income account shifted from a deficit of EUR 32 million to a surplus of EUR 76 million. Over the first five months of 2026, Romania’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 11.4 billion, compared with EUR 12.1 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
