Both the May and June readings are measured on a year-over-year basis, comparing each month’s performance to its level in the corresponding month of the previous year. The uptick suggests a gradual strengthening in consumer spending momentum as the middle of 2026 approached, potentially signaling improving conditions for retailers after earlier periods of softer growth.
