Australia unexpectedly recorded a trade surplus of AUD 1.93 billion in June 2026, swinging from a downwardly revised deficit of AUD 2.37 billion in May and confounding market expectations of a AUD 1.1 billion shortfall. The turnaround came as exports rose and imports declined. Exports climbed 9.6% month-on-month to AUD 47.70 billion in June, rebounding from an upwardly revised 7.6% drop in May, largely on the back of stronger non-monetary gold shipments. In contrast, imports slipped 0.2% month-on-month to AUD 45.77 billion, reversing an upwardly revised 0.9% gain in May, pressured mainly by lower fuel and lubricant purchases.
