Rupiah Steady as Bank Indonesia Holds Rates

The Indonesian rupiah was little changed on Wednesday afternoon, trading just below IDR 17,850 per U.S. dollar after Bank Indonesia left its benchmark interest rate steady at 5.75% for a second consecutive month, as widely anticipated. This was the first policy decision under acting Governor Destry Damayanti, who stepped in following the unexpected departure of Perry Warjiyo last month.

Year to date, Bank Indonesia has raised rates by a cumulative 100 basis points to support the rupiah and shore up investor confidence. Destry stressed that the current pause reflects the central bank’s effort to balance exchange-rate stability, inflation management, and economic growth. She also underscored that foreign exchange reserves remain more than sufficient to protect the currency.

In the near term, policymakers are expected to rely more heavily on the central bank’s broader policy toolkit—particularly foreign-exchange intervention and attractive-yield central bank securities—rather than further rate hikes alone. On the global front, the U.S. dollar index edged lower as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s July meeting minutes for fresh signals on the future path of U.S. monetary policy.
