Uruguay’s unemployment rate held steady at 7% in July 2026, remaining at its lowest level since December 2025. By region, Montevideo posted higher activity, employment, and unemployment rates than the rest of the country, with unemployment at 7.2% compared with 6.9% elsewhere. The female unemployment rate continued to exceed the male rate, at 8.6% versus 5.6%, and women also showed lower participation and employment rates overall. Unemployment was highest among young people aged 14 to 24, at 21.1%, underscoring the barriers they face when entering the labor market. The highest employment rate was observed in the 35–44 age group. The underemployment rate was 8.9%, unchanged from the previous month, while informality—measured by the share of workers not registered with social security—remained at 21.1%.
