Brazilian Real Gains as BCB Signals Intervention

The Brazilian real firmed modestly to 5.16 per USD after touching a more than one‑month low of 5.21 on August 14th, supported by expectations of fresh foreign‑exchange operations by the BCB. The central bank is anticipated to step in to boost dollar supply and safeguard market liquidity, thereby underpinning the real and shaping exchange‑rate dynamics.

On the macro front, labor market figures reinforced expectations of a further decline in Brazil’s unemployment rate, from 5.4% to 5.3%. The job market remains notably robust, with both total employment and formal job creation at record highs, which could prompt Copom to halt its current easing cycle of 25 basis points per meeting.

At the same time, inflation slowed to 4.25% in the first half of August from 4.44% in July, staying below the central bank’s upper tolerance band of 4.5%.
