India’s BSE Sensex closed about 0.5% lower at 76,570 on Wednesday, its weakest finish since July 24, extending losses into a third consecutive session. Sentiment remained fragile as escalating tensions between the US and Iran continued to drive international crude prices higher. The US launched overnight airstrikes on targets in Iran, triggering retaliatory action from Tehran in the most significant escalation between the two countries in weeks.
The rally in oil pushed global bond yields upward, underscoring concerns that persistent inflationary pressures could delay monetary easing by central banks or even prompt further tightening. On the domestic front, IndiGo, HDFC Bank and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the worst performers on the index, each slipping around 1.6%. In contrast, Adani Ports gained 1.6% after the company reported its highest-ever monthly cargo throughput.
