Austria’s economy shrank by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2026, following a downwardly revised 0.1% expansion in the previous quarter and falling short of preliminary estimates that had pointed to flat growth. This was the first quarterly contraction since the third quarter of 2024, as rising energy prices weighed on economic activity. “After six quarters of consistently positive economic indicators, we are seeing a slight decline in gross domestic product of 0.1% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the previous quarter. Economic output was mainly dampened by a further increase in energy prices,” said Manuela Lenk, Director General Statistics at Statistics Austria. On a year-on-year basis, GDP grew by 0.4% in Q2, slowing from a downwardly revised 0.8% increase in Q1.
