Sweden Posts Largest Current Account Surplus in Over a Year

Sweden’s current account surplus rose to SEK 126.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from SEK 103.7 billion in the same period a year earlier, marking the largest surplus since the first quarter of 2025. The increase was mainly driven by a stronger primary income balance, with the surplus widening to SEK 100.9 billion from SEK 76.0 billion, reflecting higher investment income (SEK 97.6 billion vs SEK 72.5 billion in Q2 2025). The services deficit also narrowed significantly, to SEK 14.0 billion from SEK 36.6 billion, as exports increased by SEK 31.0 billion, far outpacing an SEK 8.4 billion rise in imports. By contrast, the goods surplus shrank to SEK 67.7 billion from SEK 86.5 billion, as imports grew by SEK 61.5 billion, exceeding a SEK 42.7 billion increase in exports. Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit widened to SEK 28.4 billion from SEK 22.3 billion.
