UK Core CPI MoM Ticks Up to 0.3% in August, Signalling Firm Underlying Price Pressures

Core consumer prices in the United Kingdom accelerated modestly in August 2026, with the Core CPI rising 0.3% month-over-month, up from a 0.2% increase in July. The latest data, updated on 16 September 2026, underscore a slight strengthening in underlying inflation pressures as measured by the index excluding volatile components.

On a month-over-month basis, August’s reading indicates that price growth was firmer than in the previous month, when July’s 0.2% Core CPI gain reflected a more subdued pace of underlying inflation compared with June. The comparison framework shows that the August figure is measured against July, while July’s figure was itself a comparison against June, highlighting a mild but notable pick-up in momentum.

The uptick in the Core CPI may draw attention from market participants and policymakers monitoring whether underlying inflation is stabilising or reaccelerating. While the increase from 0.2% to 0.3% is incremental, it adds to the evidence set used in assessing the trajectory of domestic price pressures and potential implications for the future stance of monetary policy.
