Investors continued to weigh a warning from RBNZ Governor Anna Breman that inflation could rise further if elevated oil prices persist. This reinforced caution in the market, as higher oil costs have strengthened expectations of an interest rate hike at the central bank’s upcoming meeting. Nonetheless, a recent pullback in oil prices helped limit losses, supported by diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.
Sentiment was also underpinned by optimism ahead of the Trump–Xi summit later this week, where discussions on artificial intelligence and tariffs are anticipated, helping to prevent a deeper decline in the index.
Notable early decliners included Fisher & Paykel (-1.4%), Chorus (-0.8%), Fletcher Building (-0.8%), Meridian Energy (-0.5%), EBOS Group (-0.4%), and Freightways Group (-0.4%).
