The Shanghai Composite Index edged down 0.2% to 3,944 on Wednesday, while the Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.4% to 13,673, as investors remained cautious ahead of the closely watched Trump–Xi summit. With preliminary talks in New York last Sunday failing to reach an agreement on extending the tariff truce set to expire in November, market expectations for the meeting are muted.
Even so, the summit is expected to address a broad range of sensitive topics—including artificial intelligence, Iran, Taiwan, and trade relations—as both sides look to steady the trajectory of bilateral ties. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, are due to be received by Trump on Wednesday evening, in what will be the Chinese president’s first visit to the United States since 2015.
On the corporate front, notable losers included Bank of China, down 0.5%; CNOOC, off 0.9%; Zhongji Innolight, which slipped 1.4%; and Suzhou TFC Optical Communication, which fell 1.2%.
