Germany's GfK Consumer Climate Indicator fell to -30.6 heading into October 2026, down from a revised -26.8 in September and weaker than market expectations for a decline to -27.4. This was the lowest reading since May, driven chiefly by a sharp deterioration in income expectations. That sub-index plunged 16.7 points to -15.0, its lowest level since April, as households grew increasingly concerned that elevated energy prices would erode their purchasing power.
Willingness to save rose 6 points to 21.5, reaching its highest level since the 2008 financial crisis, while willingness to buy slipped by 1 point to -10.8, continuing to hover around the -10 mark, where it has remained for more than three years. In contrast, economic expectations edged up 0.5 points to -3.4, marking a fifth consecutive monthly increase, supported by Germany’s better-than-expected economic performance in the first half of 2026. Price expectations eased slightly to -0.4 from -0.2.
