The S&P/TSX Composite Index was little changed around the 36,000 mark on Friday, as oil prices and global bond yields eased from recent peaks but stayed relatively high. Crude retreated from its latest highs following reports that the US and Iran were considering an agreement that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US blockade on Iranian ports. The pullback in oil provided some relief to credit‑sensitive sectors that have been under pressure amid concerns over energy‑driven inflation.
Global yields gave back part of their sharp gains from the previous two sessions, though they remained elevated. Among financials, RBC and TD Bank each advanced nearly 1%.
Gold prices moved higher, bolstering mining stocks. Agnico Eagle inched up, while Barrick gained about 0.5%. Kinross rebounded nearly 2%, recovering some ground after slumping more than 10% on Thursday when it lowered its production outlook for 2026 and 2027.
In contrast, major energy producers fell roughly 1.5% each as weaker oil prices weighed on the sector and dragged on the broader index.
