Gains were led by consumer discretionary, consumer staples, and materials stocks, while weakness in energy and real estate tempered the advance.
Investor sentiment remained cautious ahead of New Zealand’s September business confidence figures and China’s PMI releases due later in the day, both closely watched for signals on private-sector momentum in New Zealand’s largest trading partner. Markets were also still digesting the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update in the run-up to the general election on November 7.
Overseas, Wall Street ended lower as US Treasury yields moved sharply higher. Early movers on the NZX 50 included Delegat Group (up 3.8%), A2 Milk (1.6%), Sanford (1.5%), Port of Tauranga (1.5%), Chorus (1.1%), Ventia Services Group (0.9%), Fletcher Building (0.6%), and ANZ Group (0.3%).
