Japan’s Retail Momentum Cools as August Sales Growth Slows to 2.7% YoY

Japan’s retail sales growth eased in August 2026, signaling a moderation in consumer spending momentum after a stronger showing in July. Year-over-year, retail sales rose 2.7% in August, down from a 4.0% increase in July, according to data updated on 29 September 2026.

The figures highlight a clear deceleration on an annual comparison basis. Both the current and previous readings measure the change in retail sales relative to the same month a year earlier, meaning July’s 4.0% reflected growth versus July 2025, while August’s 2.7% is measured against August 2025.
