Private-sector employment in the US increased by 90K in September 2026, surpassing market expectations of 70K and following a downwardly revised gain of 36K in August. Hiring picked up for the first time since May, driven primarily by education and health services (+55K) and leisure and hospitality (+22K). By contrast, financial activities (-16K) and professional and business services (-11K) posted job losses. Large firms expanded payrolls by 14K, while businesses with fewer than 50 employees added 23K positions. “It’s a strong report. After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid,” said Nela Richardson of ADP.
