Japan Coincident Index Slips to 3-Month Low

Japan’s coincident economic index—a key barometer of current economic conditions, based on indicators such as industrial production, employment, and retail sales—fell to 118.7 in August 2026 from a revised 120.6 in July, preliminary data showed. This was the lowest level since May and reflected the impact of natural disasters and disruptions linked to developments in the Middle East.

Despite the month-on-month decline, the economy continued a moderate recovery, supported by improving employment and income conditions, as well as recent government policy measures that have bolstered private consumption. Business investment also strengthened, though companies remained cautious about the outlook.

At the same time, the Bank of Japan left its short-term policy rate unchanged at 1.0% in July, the highest level since September 1995, while signaling room for further rate increases as underlying inflation nears 2% and financial conditions remain accommodative.
