Norway’s manufacturing production declined by 0.4% month-over-month in August 2026, offsetting the 0.7% increase recorded in July. The contraction was mainly driven by lower output in several key industries, including food, beverages and tobacco (-1.2% vs 0.4% in July), food products (-1.0% vs -0.1%), textiles, wearing apparel and leather (-0.9% vs 0.5%), refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals (-1.7% vs -1.1%), computer and electrical equipment (-0.5% vs 2.2%), and machinery and equipment (-2.8% vs 5.7%).
Production also dropped sharply in ships, boats and oil platforms (-9.0% vs 8.9%). By contrast, wood and wood products rebounded strongly (12.6% vs -8.5%), as did transport equipment n.e.c. (21.9% vs -14.5%). Output also rose in rubber, plastic and mineral products (3.8% vs 1.5%), basic metals (4.0% vs -2.6%), non-ferrous metals (3.4% vs -3.5%), fabricated metal products (3.5% vs 0.4%), and in the repair and installation of machinery (1.0% vs 1.8%).
On an annual basis, manufacturing output growth eased to 0.4% in August from 1.5% in July.
