Household spending in Sweden rose by 1.1% month-on-month in September 2026, rebounding from a revised 0.4% decline in August. Growth in expenditure strengthened notably on furnishings, household equipment, and routine home maintenance (2.7% vs 1.0% in August); transportation (1.8% vs 1.2%); information and communication (2.4% vs 0.2%); personal care, social protection, and other miscellaneous goods and services (3.6% vs 0.1%); and healthcare (0.3% vs 0.0%).
At the same time, consumption recovered in several categories that had previously contracted: food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.3% vs -1.3%); alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and drugs (3.6% vs -4.0%); clothing and footwear (3.1% vs -1.5%); and recreation, sports, and culture (3.2% vs -1.7%).
In contrast, spending fell in housing and utilities (-0.4% vs 0.3%) and in restaurants and accommodation (-0.3% vs 0.9%). On an annual basis, household consumption increased by 3.5% in September 2026, up from 2.3% in August.
