US consumer prices rose 0.6% month-on-month in September 2026, up from 0.4% in August, matching market expectations and marking the largest monthly gain since April. The energy index jumped 5.2%, after a 2.1% increase in August, driven chiefly by a 9.1% surge in gasoline prices, which accounted for more than half of the overall CPI rise. Shelter costs increased 0.4%, compared with 0.3% in August, while food prices were flat, as higher restaurant prices offset declines in grocery costs. Meanwhile, core CPI, which excludes food and energy, climbed 0.3%, surpassing expectations for a 0.2% increase.
