In the United States, core consumer prices—excluding food and energy—rose 0.3% month-over-month in September 2026, matching August’s pace and exceeding the median market forecast of a 0.2% increase. Price gains were driven in particular by shelter costs, which accelerated to 0.4% from 0.3% in August, and by transportation services, which climbed 0.6% after a 0.5% rise, marking the strongest advance in six months and indicating that higher energy prices are feeding through into transportation and logistics. In addition, the CPI for medical care services rebounded, increasing 0.3% following a 0.2% decline in the prior month. On an annual basis, the core inflation rate stood at 2.6%.
