Georgia Trade Deficit Widens to 9-Month High in September

Georgia’s trade deficit widened to USD 1,074.4 million in September 2026 from USD 862.5 million a year earlier, marking the largest gap since December 2025. Exports grew by 4.0% year-on-year to USD 731.5 million, while imports increased at a faster pace of 15.3% to USD 1,805.9 million.

Over the January–September period, exports jumped 19.6% to USD 6,153.2 million, driven mainly by strong growth in shipments of petroleum and petroleum oils (up 1,192.5%) and precious metal ores and concentrates (up 68.0%). Imports over the same period rose 5.3% to USD 14,382.0 million, supported by higher purchases of petroleum and petroleum oils (up 44.5%) and crude petroleum and petroleum oils, despite a 13.3% decline in motor car imports.

By country, the largest increases in imports came from Russia (up 21.7%) and China (up 21.8%). As a result, Georgia’s trade deficit for January–September narrowed to USD 8,228.8 million, compared with USD 8,513.2 million in the same period of 2025.
