Initial jobless claims in the United States fell by 6,000 to 189,000 in the final week of October, coming in below market expectations of 196,000 and down from a revised 195,000 in the prior week. This figure matches the 57-year low last seen in mid-July, underscoring the continued strength and resilience of the labor market despite growing economic headwinds. Solid corporate profits and firm domestic demand are helping to contain layoffs, while employers remain cautious about making staffing changes amid uncertainty related to the war involving Iran, elevated energy prices, Federal Reserve policy, and trade policy. At the same time, continuing claims rose by 23,000 to 1.718 million in the week ended October 24.
