FX.co ★ Armenia and Azerbaijan clash over Nagorno-Karabakh

According to a statement of Armenia's authorities, Azerbaijani troops started a military campaign to capture Nagorno-Karabakh, which is an Armenian separatist enclave in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan and Armenia have been fighting for quite a long time over this territory. In 1994, Nagorno-Karabakh was recognized as a third party and a cease-fire was reached.

On last Saturday, April 2, the states started the largest armed conflict since a full-scale war over the region with all kinds of weapons involved: air craft, tanks, and artillery.

Due to clashes, some airlines had to change plane routes. Many international routes pass through the republic's air corridor.

Baku blames the escalation of the conflict on Armenia. Azerbaijan stated that Armenian forces shot down one of its helicopters and attacked positions of the Azerbaijani army.

Dozens of people were killed during the Saturday fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh. States blames each other for offensive military operations and fire.

Russia stands for a cease-fire. In 2008, Presidents of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on peaceful settlement of the conflict. The Russian Federation also participated in signing the cease-fire agreement in 1994.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic separated from Azerbaijan in 1992. The state fought for the return of the territory for two years.
