The candidates elections for this position started on July 21 and consisted of 6 rounds. Antonio Guterres took the lead from the very beginning.

Remarkably, Guterres has served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for ten years.

13 from 15 Council members voted for Antonio Guterres. Two votes were abstentions.

“I can say that I worked as UN High Commissioner for Refugees for ten years, something that stipulates being at the center of all world political crises and dealing with all parties to any conflict. I'm sincerely convinced that that I could always stick to the key values — impartiality, neutrality and independence,” Guterres commented his appointment.

Antonio Guterres was born in Lisbon. Two years after he had graduated from university, he joined the Portuguese Socialist Party. For some time he was a deputy in the Portuguese National Parliament and secretary and then Secretary-General of the Socialist Party. From 1999 to 2005 Guterres was the leader of the Socialist International.
