US Premarket for August 22: investors continue to get rid of risks

US stock index futures fell on Monday as a sharp risk aversion was seen at the beginning of a key week for financial markets – just before the meeting of central bank policymakers at the annual retreat in Jackson Hole.

Futures for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 fell more than 1%. The yield on 10-year Treasury bonds was virtually unchanged, while the yield on two-year bonds rose by about four basis points, deepening the inversion of the yield curve, which is seen as a precursor of recession.

US Premarket for August 22: investors continue to get rid of risks

Obviously, the entire July index growth, which we observed recently and caused by market expectations regarding the Fed's reversal to a slower pace of interest rate hikes, is coming to naught. More recently, despite the decline in the rate of inflation in the United States, Fed representatives have begun to talk quite a lot about the fact that an increase in interest rates is still necessary. The Jackson Hole symposium will give Fed Chairman Jerome Powell a chance to reconsider his attitude toward monetary policy before the next committee meeting, which will be held on September 27-28.

Powell is expected to confirm everything he and his colleagues have recently discussed. The risk is that he may abandon the dovish rhetoric after investors have formulated the opposite position and provoke another fall in the stock markets. Investors are also aware of the impending acceleration of the Fed's balance sheet reduction, which will take effect next month and increase pressure on riskier assets that have benefited from sufficient liquidity.

Premarket

Signify Health shares rose 37.5% in premarket trading due to the escalation of a potential war over home health care providers. Amazon.com (AMZN) and UnitedHealth (UNH) are now among the main bidders.

After falling by 40.0% on Friday, the black streak for Bed Bath & Beyond is not over. Already, the shares have sunk by another 10.2% in the premarket. The news that investor Ryan Cohen sold his shares in a home goods retailer provoked such a large sale.

The securities of AMC Entertainment, a cinema chain, fell by 30.6% in the premarket ahead of the debut of the so-called preferred shares of AMC. CEO Adam Aron tweeted a reminder to investors that the total value of their AMC assets will be a combination of ordinary shares and new ones that were provided as a special dividend.

Ford is trading down 2.8%, and Occidental Petroleum lost 1.4% after rising nearly 10% on Friday amid news that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has received regulatory approval to buy up to 50% of the energy producer.

Everyone's favorite Tesla fell in the premarket after CEO Elon Musk said that the price of the company's full self-driving software would rise from $3,000 to $15,000 next month.

As for the technical picture of the S&P500

The nearest support of $4,180 has failed again, and only the intermediate level of $4,150 is ahead of the sellers. Its breakdown will give a direct road to the area of $4,116 and $4,090, which will mean a fairly significant correction. It will be possible to talk about a new index growth only after controlling the resistance of $ 4,180, which will pave the way to $ 4,208. Only in this way will we see fairly active growth in the area of $ 4,229, where large sellers will return to the market again. At a minimum, there will be those who want to lock in profits on long positions. A more distant target will be the $4,255 level.
