US stock market closed lower, Dow Jones down 1.01%

At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones fell 1.01% to hit a monthly low, the S&P 500 fell 0.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.18%.

Traders on Tuesday also evaluated the American macro statistics. Thus, the volume of retail sales in the country in April increased by 0.4% compared to March, which turned out to be worse than expected. And industrial production in the US over the past month unexpectedly increased by 0.5% in monthly terms.

The US Treasury notified Congress back in January of the start of "extraordinary measures" in connection with the estimated achievement of the national debt ceiling of $31.381 trillion. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had previously warned that without a decision on the public debt, the government would not be able to continue meeting all of its obligations, possibly by June 1st.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was the leading gainer among the Dow Jones Index components today, gaining 2.28 points or 0.74% to close at 311.74. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) rose 1.23 points or 0.60% to close at 204.56. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) rose 0.10 points or 0.08% to close at 123.46.

The least gainers were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which shed 3.35 points or 2.80% to end the session at 116.48. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 2.48 points or 2.47 points to close at 98.01, while Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was down 2.42 or 5.65 points. %) and finished trading at 227.88.

Among the top performers in the S&P 500 in today's trading were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD), which rose 4.19% to 101.48, Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG), which gained 2 .68% to close at 120.09, as well as Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which rose 2.57% to close at 119.51.

The least gainers were Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR), which shed 6.89% to close at 41.38. Shares of Gen Digital Inc (NASDAQ:GEN) shed 5.79% to end the session at 15.46. Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) tumbled 5.71% to 8.75.

The leading performers in the NASDAQ Composite Index today were Exela Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:XELA), which rose 103.90% to 6.28, Applied Blockchain Inc (NASDAQ:APLD), which gained 78.92. % to close at 6.11, and Missfresh Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:MF), which rose 50.29% to close at 0.82.

The least gainers were Ohmyhome Ltd (NASDAQ:OMH), which shed 79.44% to close at 6.35. Shares of OncoSec Medical Inc (NASDAQ:ONCS) shed 33.80% to end the session at 0.55. Modular Medical Inc (NASDAQ:MODD) dropped 32.01% to 0.85.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that fell in price (2367) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (608), while quotes of 77 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 2,460 companies fell in price, 1,126 rose, and 148 remained at the level of the previous close.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, rose 5.08% to 17.99.

Gold futures for June delivery lost 1.47%, or 29.70, to hit $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for June delivery fell 0.77%, or 0.55, to $70.56 a barrel. Brent futures for July delivery fell 0.84%, or 0.63, to $74.60 a barrel.

Meanwhile, in the Forex market, the EUR/USD pair remained unchanged 0.12% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to hit 136.37.

Futures on the USD index rose 0.19% to 102.46.
