Leaders of several developing countries have accused the oil industry and rich economies of contributing to climate change and demanded that they pay for the damage caused.
"The oil and gas industry continues to make a profit of almost 3 billion US dollars a day," the Prime Minister of Antigua said at COP27, as quoted by Reuters.
"It's time to force these companies to pay a global carbon tax on their profits as a source of financing for losses and damages," said Gaston Browne. "While they are making money, the planet is burning."
Another leader of the island nation, President of Vanuatu Nikenike Vurobaravu, called on the International Court of Justice to make sure that all countries are committed to combating climate change to ensure that the rights of future generations will not be violated.
Meanwhile, the President of Senegal called on rich countries to increase financial assistance to African states suffering from the effects of climate change and warned against calls to abandon fossil fuels.
"Let's be clear: we are in favor of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But we Africans cannot accept that our vital interests are ignored," Macky Sall said.
COP27 is still focused on compensating developing countries for floods and droughts related to climate change.
"We will not give up... the alternative will send us to a watery grave," the Prime Minister of the Bahamas said, quoted by the BBC.
I am not here to ask any of you to love the people of my country with the same passion as I do," Philip Davis also said. "I ask what it costs you to have millions of climate refugees, putting pressure on political and economic systems around the world."
