According to the European Commission (EC), if the United States imposes additional tariffs on European goods, EU leaders will respond as they see fit. They are planning to defend their interests. On this point, European leaders are firm: they are ready to protect their businesses, workers, and consumers.
From the EU’s perspective, American tariffs on European imports are unjustified. If US President Donald Trump and his administration introduce them, the EU will not hesitate to strike back.
For now, the European Commission has not received any official notifications about additional tariffs on EU goods. However, the situation could change at any moment. The EC calls such tariffs groundless and Trump's trade policy illegal and economically counterproductive.
EU leaders also pointed out that the deeply integrated supply chains built over decades of transatlantic trade and investment could be severely disrupted by such moves.
"Tariffs are essentially taxes," the European Commission stated. "By imposing tariffs, the US would be taxing its own citizens, raising costs for business, and fueling inflation. Moreover, tariffs heighten economic uncertainty and disrupt the efficiency and integration of global markets," the EU concluded.
