US President Donald Trump has voiced concern over America's trade imbalance with India. The White House leader argued that India should have cut import tariffs on US goods a long time ago. What a twist!
According to Trump, India has offered to reduce its tariffs on US goods to nearly zero. However, he believes that the decision should have been made "years ago" and that it is "getting late" now.
The US president backed up his remarks with figures on the trade imbalance, stating that Americans sell "very few goods" to India due to high tariffs while importing massive amounts in return.
"It has been a totally one-sided disaster!" Trump wrote in his typically expressive style on Truth Social. He also reiterated his criticism of India's significant purchases of oil and military equipment from Russia.
Earlier, on September 1, Peter Navarro, Trump's trade and economic adviser, expressed concern about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The comment came as the leaders gathered for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
Media reports previously noted that Trump had "shocked India" by imposing 25% export tariffs and calling the country a "dead economy." Journalists speculated that Modi might have "felt insulted." Soon after, the Indian leader reportedly ignored several calls from the White House.
