German inflation accelerates to 2.9% in August amid higher energy costs

Consumer inflation in Germany accelerated to 2.9% year-on-year in August 2026, up from 2.8% in July, Bloomberg reports. The reading was the highest since April, although slightly below analysts’ median forecast of 3.1%. Bloomberg cites the situation in the energy sector as the main source of price pressure: fuel and commodity prices remain elevated amid the lack of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.

The acceleration in Germany, the euro area’s largest economy, mirrors a broader European trend: eurozone inflation is expected to rise to 3.3% in August. Data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) shows that upward momentum in the German market has been in place for three consecutive months—from 2.4% in June to 2.8% in July, stabilizing near the 3% mark at the end of summer.

Bundesbank experts, however, warn of the risk that inflation expectations could become persistently elevated. The regulator forecasts that eurozone price growth may exceed the European Central Bank’s 2% target even after the US‑Iran war ends.
