Canada’s GDP growth accelerates to 3.3% in Q2 despite US tariffs

Bloomberg reports that Canada’s GDP growth accelerated to an annualized 3.3% in the second quarter of 2026, marking a confident recovery from a year‑long downturn triggered by US tariff pressure and slower migration inflows. The upswing reflects Canadian firms’ successful adaptation to Washington’s trade barriers.

Foreign trade and robust private sector activity were the main drivers of growth. Exports jumped 15.1%, the fastest pace in over three years. Business investment in non‑residential structures, machinery, and industrial equipment rose 12.3%, the strongest result in two years, while household consumer spending increased by 3.3%.

The acceleration comes against the backdrop of a renewed trade confrontation with Washington. In response to Donald Trump’s protectionist measures, the Canadian government announced large support programs for affected domestic businesses and prepared retaliatory 50% tariffs on US imports, covering shipments of steel, aluminum, furniture, clothes, gaming consoles, smartphones, and other consumer electronics.
