Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and Vice Chancellor of Germany Sigmar Gabriel called Athens’ demand for payment of war reparations inappropriate. “This is foolish”, Sigmar Gabriel said in response to a corresponding question.
He believes that it is a political trick to discuss this issue at the present moment. Sigmar Gabriel also pointed out that the current financial problems in Greece had nothing to do with the topic of war reparations.
On April 5, Deputy Finance Minister of Greece Dimitris Mardas said that reparation claims from Greece were worth €278.7 billion. The same conclusion was made by a parliament committee that is responsible for assessing the value of the compensation. Besides, in early March, Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras said that Germany owes Greece more than €160 billion. Thus, the sum of demands swelled more than €118 billion in a month.
