The Baltic States, Finland, and Poland undertook the construction of the Trans- European railway network Rail Baltica in 2018. The necessary declaration on the implementation of the project was signed by the Baltic States in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
The document was signed during the high-level transport conference TEN-T Days 2015 in order to prove to the European Commission that the Baltic States intend to start construction in 2018. Minister of Transport of Latvia Anrijs Matiss said that Rail Baltica is a great example of an infrastructure project of a common interest.
EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc added that this project will contribute to the creation of new jobs and growth of competitiveness.
“Lithuania supports the intention expressed by the EU Transport coordinators to develop further the trans-European transport network and look into alternative financing instruments as well as to find additional resources in order to ensure the connectivity. Although private financing cannot be the only solution for the implementation of the whole TEN-T, it can be an important part of it”, underlined Minister Rimantas Sinkevicius.
