Russia adds US wines to food embargo

Russia's Rospotrebnadzor, the federal service for surveillance of consumer rights protection and human well-being, banned three types of wines from the US. The Russian sanitary authority allegedly discovered pesticides in Gnarly Head Chardonnay, Geyser Peak Merlot, and Crane Lake Moscato, all of them produced in California. Wines harmful to the health of the Russian nationals are urgently being removed from the shelves of wine stores. Rospotrebnadzor’s press service reported that an investigation revealed high levels of phthalates and bifenazate pesticide in these wine batches. The decision of the Russian watchdog comes as no surprise amid the political standoff between Russia and the West. Struggling with new economic sanctions imposed by the US and EU, Moscow is delivering counterstrokes by fierce destruction of all items eluding the embargo. Meanwhile, hundreds of tons of frozen pork, two truckloads of cheese, three truckloads of frozen geese, and other delicacies have been dumped under the new decree. The new round of retaliatory measures is a ban on alcohol imports from the US. “Phthalates are the first class of danger according to the sanitary and toxicological indicators, and can cause functional and other organic changes in the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as oncological illnesses, and fertility problems in both men and women,” the sanitary watchdog said in a statement.
