Italian energy group Eni has discovered one of the world’s largest natural gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea close to Egypt’s coasts.
According to the data, the “supergiant” gas field named Zohr could hold a potential of 30 trillion cubic feet gas in place covering an area of about 100 square kilometers.
“Zohr is the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea and could become one of the world’s largest natural-gas finds,” ENI said in a statement. It also added that the find could help Egypt meet its gas needs for decades.
Eni’s chief executive, Claudio Descalzi has recently visited Cairo and discussed the discovery and plans for its development. The company has been operating in Egypt since 1954.
