Ukraine stopped importing electricity from Russia due to the end of Rovenskaya Atomic Power Station construction activities as it was announced by Ukrenerho national energy company. Ukrenerho indicated that the capacity of the nuclear power plant was limited to 1.8 GW because of the maintenance works; the interstate power lines from NPP to Kiev were connected. «In a period of decreased nuclear capacity, power shortage was compensated at the expense of supplemental reserve capacity of the thermal powers and partially - by importing electricity from Russia», - explained Ukrenerho.
Electricity demands of the united energy system of Ukraine are provided by their own power generation: the report reads.
On November 12, 2015 Ukrenerho informed that they were ready to stop electricity import from Russia. On November 9 Volodymyr Demchyshyn, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister, reported that Ukraine had stopped importing electricity from Russia. He admitted that the country could completely abandon the supply on November 11.
In late December 2014, Ukraine and Russia signed the contract to export electricity from Russia to Ukrainian power grid. The annual contract provided for a schedule of deliveries of 1.5 GW per hour.
