Record number of candidates seek 2013 Nobel Peace Prize

Having processed all the applications on Monday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee unveiled the biggest number of candidates ever ― 259 with 50 being international and social organizations.
In 2012, 231 applicants applied for the Nobel Peace Prize, while in 2011 the committee received 241 claims.
Candidates had a chance to submit their claims and required documents until February 1. Then, the list containing 150-200 names is normally presented to the Nobel Committee for consideration. The committee members discuss the nominees and pick 5-20 names. After the list is shortened, it is passed to the Nobel Institute consultants who analyze it during approximately two months. So, voting on Nobel Laureates is held at the start of October.
The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony takes place in Oslo, on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Four other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm.
In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize went to the European Union for the achievements in bringing peace, democracy and human rights to Europe.
