German Eurosceptic activists formed a party under the name of “Alternative for Germany”, campaigning for the country’s exit from the currency bloc.
The German Eurosceptics claim that no party in the Bundestag argues Germany membership of the EU, however the issue is highly topical now. The point is that Germany is a role model for European economies, and, in fact, it spends tens of thousands of euros dragging Southern countries of the region along.
The just-founded party is to hold its first meeting in Frankfurt on the Main within the next few days to decide on a leader.
As said on the website of the new political association, adopting the euro in Germany was a “fatal mistake”. The founders of the party, well-known German economists, lawyers and businessmen, call for either the country’s return to its national currency or creation of another union that would include economically resilient countries only such as Finland, Austria, and the Netherlands. At the same time, the party acknowledges that the EU is really efficient, favouring it.
The Alternative for Germany members might also gain an advantage if Angela Merkel accepts the painful terms of another bailout for Greece. They firmly believe that insuring black money of Russians in Cypriot banks would be a big blunder.
According to surveys, about one fourth of Germans would be happy to get the Deutschemark back, so the new political coalition may well gain support of many compatriots.
German Eurosceptics already made several attempts to influence the situation, but they would fail to draw a response of the society as nationalistic ideas are discouraged in Germany. However, Germans had to revise the priorities under the pressure of the Eurozone crisis and the part their country plays in it. Meanwhile, there is nothing but six months left until the next Bundestag elections.
