Military exercise starts in Arctic

Annual military exercise Nunalivut 2013 is meant as a manifestation of Canada's presence in the High North.
“During Operation Nunalivut 2013, the Canadian Armed Forces will face some of the most challenging terrain and weather conditions Canada has to offer,” Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence said. “This year’s operation will exercise Canadian sovereignty and demonstrate the Canadian Armed Forces’ abilities in the High Arctic during winter,” Mr MacKay added.
Nunalivut 2013 will last until April 30 of 2013 to the northwest of the Arctic Archipelago, between Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island to Isachsen on Ellef Ringnes Island.
The exercises will be assisted by the Royal Canadian Air Force CC-138 Twin Otter. The planes will transport cargo and military personnel as well as conduct intelligence surveillance.
According to representatives of the U.S. Department of Defense, the Canadian Rangers will patrol the areas, including Devon Island, in a bid to boost their knowledge and experience in the challenging Arctic environment.
Brigadier-General Guy Hamel pointed out, “Joint Task Force (North) needs to be prepared to respond to calls for assistance for any emergencies on the land or at sea. Operation Nunalivut 2013 provides the perfect opportunity to test the capabilities that will allow us to deploy rapidly and effectively in response to tomorrow’s safety and security challenges.”
Nunalivut is not the only martial exercise arranged in Arctic, there are also operations Nunalivut and Nunakput.
