Armenia negotiating word “cognac” with EU

The Deputy Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Garegin Melkonyan said Armenia and the European Union were discussing the right to use the word “cognac” for Armenian brandy.
The deputy economy minister said the negotiations were held in the framework of the EU-Armenia Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. The word “cognac” is a traditional local name, meanwhile, the process of beverage production has a rich history in the region, the deputy minister added.
Apart from cognac, Yerevan is eager to get the legal right for the word “champagne”. However, it is not as crucial as for brandy.
According to decree from May 1, 1909 and November 30, 1938, cognac is alcoholic beverage, produced by means of distillation in the wine-growing region surrounding the town from which it takes the name. Brandy produced in other France’s regions or countries cannot be named cognac.
