According to Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, Russia, the US and China should stop trade wars. The EU chief proposed to make a commitment to reform the World Trade Organization. He also called on Europe, China, the United States and Russia to work together to avoid trade wars and their consequences.
Trade conflicts lead to nowhere, so the reform of the WTO is needed, Tusk said at a summit in Beijing, held amid stark challenges in economic relations between the US, China and the EU.
Earlier, Donald Trump described the EU as one of his country’s greatest “foes”, calling it “very difficult”. Shortly before that, he threatened to slap tariffs on Chinese and European goods.
EU and Chinese leaders pledged support for “fostering an open world economy … resisting protectionism and unilateralism, and making globalization more open, balanced, inclusive, and beneficial to all”. However, EU leaders resisted China’s push for an anti-US alliance and kept a neutral stance.
