Loonie goes vertical

The Bank of Canada has put a vertical 10-dollar bill into circulation. It is the first Canada’s bank note with a vertical orientation of inscriptions and historical images.

According to the central bank’s website, the new note is featured with the portrait of civil rights activist Viola Desmond on one side and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights on the other. Apart of that, the banknote depicts state symbols – the Canadian flag, the country's emblem, excerpts from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the glass dome of the Library of Parliament.

Notably, Viola Desmond was the second woman whose portrait was printed on a Canadian bank note after the queen of Great Britain. Viola Irene Desmond (1914-1965) was a colored activist who started a fight against racial segregation in Canada. In 1946, she refused to move from a whites-only area in a cinema.
