Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned that his government would not back the Brexit agreement unless Spain is given concessions on Gibraltar.
He emphasized that in case there are no changes regarding the Gibraltar accord before November 25, his country will withdraw support for the draft Brexit divorce deal.
The prime minister said that the Gibraltar issue is of critical importance to his country and Britain must negotiate it with Spain bilaterally.
"As a country we cannot assume that whatever happens in the future with Gibraltar would be negotiated by the UK and EU - it will have to be negotiated between Spain and the UK," he said.
Earlier, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said Spain would not approve the Brexit agreement unless the future status of Gibraltar is discussed with his country and the draft Brexit withdrawal deal contains a clarification of this issue.
Article 184 of the draft Brexit deal says that the EU and the UK will seek to "negotiate rapidly the agreements governing their future relationship" before the end of a transition period in December 2020. The current arrangements relate to Gibraltar and other UK territories.
Spain, Ireland and Cyprus have discussed border issues with Britain throughout the Brexit negotiations.
