According to media, about 5 million British people signed a petition to cancel Brexit and remain in the European Union. The British government also demanded Prime Minister Theresa May to resign. “The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU,” the petition reads.
The petition passed the 100,000 signatures, and that means it will be considered for debate by the British Parliament. It was backed by a lot of celebrities, such as actor Hugh Grant, actress Jennifer Saunders and British physicist Brian Cox. Meanwhile, signatures are coming in from all over the world, including Russia, China, and Iran.
The Sunday Times reported that eleven British ministers intended to appeal to Theresa May demanding to leave her post. Experts stated that her credibility began to fall, and Theresa May would lose it completely quite soon.
The Sunday Times noted that six ministers from May’s opposition wanted David Lidington, the Deputy Prime Minister, to takeover as the country's leader. He is expected to extend the negotiations with the EU regarding a new policy on Brexit. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove are also in the list of possible contenders.
The political tensions in the UK increase as the date of the country's withdrawal from the European Union approaches. Earlier, Brexit was scheduled for March 29, 2019; however, Theresa May asked the EU to postpone it until June 30.
