Earlier this year, the US has banned Huawei from selling equipment to its telecom companies accusing the tech giant of espionage on the government. The United States has also put pressure on its allies to exclude Huawei from their mobile networks. However, Germany, being very meticulous when protecting the state security and interests of its citizens, has resisted the US pressure to ban the supply of Chinese equipment. The German government has decided not to bar Huawei from its 5G networks. What is more, in the latest edition of the security requirements for regulating mobile networks, the German Federal Network Agency has omitted the phrase stating that “the system should only be sourced from trusted suppliers.” It may seem that Germany is not concerned about its own security. However, some experts believe that Germany’s decision on Huawei will boost further cooperation with China which remains an important business partner for the eurozone. Although the decision not to block Huawei’s access has brought criticism against Germany, the officials believe that banning it would delay the launch of 5G network and cost billions of dollars. Meanwhile, in case of a real information security threat, Germany can stop the Huawei production at any time using this measure as a pressure tool on China.
