A representative of China’s Xinhua news agency made a curious post on the English version of the website. Impressed by the budget fight in the U.S. Congress, Liu Chang calls to unite and de-Americanize the world.
The two U.S. parties came to an impasse over the 2014 budget and debt ceiling, forcing the whole world to hold the breath in anticipation of a solution. Liu Chang is sure that, to avoid such stalemates in future, developing countries should move to the fore. To start with, it is necessary to enhance the role of developing countries in the leading international financial institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. As a second step, Mr. Chang offers to make the yuan a reserve currency instead of the U.S. dollar.
Being a state-owned agency, Xinhua is believed to be the voice of China’s government. Besides Chinese authorities, IMF head Christine Lagarde and World Bank President Jim Kim also expressed concerns over the U.S. government partial shutdown.
