New York created the first state-based gasoline reserve to strengthen energy infrastructure in case of emergency, the press release on the Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s website reads.
The fuel supplies to the reserve that will hold 3 million gallons (about 11 million liters) of fuel started on October 27, Sunday. The New York authorities hope to prevent fuel shortage in case of any disruptions caused by natural disasters with the help of such a reserve.
The cost of a pilot program aimed at creation of the gas reserve is estimated at 10 million dollars. The plans to launch a gas reserve emerged after the hurricane Sandy hit New York and New Jersey last October. The total loss from the disaster is estimated at $65 billion dollars. Above all, the states were left without fuel and the gas station halted work due to outages.
