What could possibly end the long-lasting trade war between the European Union and the United States? Surprisingly, lobsters turned out to be a reason for reconciliation between the two sides. In particular, the end of tariffs on the US lobster imports opened the door to further trade agreements between the EU and the US. The US and Europe have been involved in the trade dispute for more than three years. However, it is not so widely discussed in the media compared to a more serious confrontation between the US and China. Yet, the trade war between the two parties has affected various industries including aviation, machine manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and even seafood. Surprisingly, it was the seafood that helped ease the trade tensions. Thus, the European Commission has agreed to lift tariffs on US frozen and live lobster for the next five years. This decision is considered to be crucial in de-escalation of transatlantic tensions. The US administration, in turn, is planning to cut tariffs on a number of European goods. The two chief negotiators, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Commissioner Phil Hogan, hope that these tariff reductions will “mark just the beginning of a process that will lead to additional agreements that create more free, fair, and reciprocal transatlantic trade.” It seems that the US is tired of being in conflict with two opponents at a time. That is, the deal with the EU will help shift all the focus on the trade war with China.
